Discussions about the 'worst' Mario game really boil down to what you value in a game. Diehard fans might point to titles like Mario's Time Machine or Mario is Missing due to their departure from traditional gameplay and focus on education. Others lament over the CD-i games like Hotel Mario because of their clunky mechanics and odd presentation. However, it's these very games that have added to the rich tapestry that is Mario's history, and they're a fascinating testament to Nintendo's experimental phase with licensing in the early 90s.

Gotta say, Mario is Missing! never did it for me. Felt like they turned a fun game franchise into a lame edutainment snooze fest.

Also Mario's Early Years, which focused on preschools, and Mario's Game Gallery, which is just...casino games for kids.

I tend to have a soft spot for Mario's Early Years. As an educational tool, it actually did a pretty decent job for its time. It’s easy to knock these games because they aren’t ‘challenging’ or ‘exciting,’ but they aren’t meant to be Mario Odyssey. These games were aimed at very young children, and personally, I think they served that niche well. Having Mario as a teacher is kinda cool when you’re five!

Mario's Game Gallery might not have been the best gameplay-wise, I’ll give you that, but it laid groundwork for so many things. Did you know it was the first CD-ROM game by Nintendo which was kinda revolutionary if ya think about it. Also, Charles Martinet's debut was historic. He shaped the character in unexpected ways! Plus as a kid, didn't realize I was learning from the Go Fish game lol.
