Your statement disregards the historical context of these franchises. Mario’s inception predates Sonic by a significant margin, originating from the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong. The fundamental aspects of these characters diverge in their core themes: Mario’s design is rooted in a varied, multi-genre approach, maintaining universal appeal, whereas Sonic was explicitly created to rival the speed and edginess that Nintendo’s mascot didn't embody. Moreover, while Mario’s platformers helped rescue the video game industry during the crash of the 80s, Sonic boosted the console war narrative of the early 90s. It's not about catching up; it's about how they both defined different aspects of gaming culture.

Idk seems kinda weird to me. Mario's world is all about jumping and adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom and rescuing Peach, and then you have Sonic with like, chaos emeralds, Eggman and all that. They feel too different to say one's a ripoff of the other.

Mario vs. Sonic is an age-old debate, but calling Mario a ripoff? That doesn't even make sense. Mario basically wrote the book on platforming and character design way before Sonic's creators put pen to paper. Sonic's game mechanics revolve around speed and reflexes, true, but Mario's focus on precise platform jumping and creative level design is what has kept the franchise at the top for so long. And let's not ignore cultural impact. Mario is the universally recognized mascot of video gaming as a whole.

Dude, you do realize Mario was around way before Sonic, right? Sonic debuted in '91 but Mario's been hitting bricks since the 80s. I mean, come on, the whole platforming genre was basically defined by Mario. And slow? Ever play Mario on star power? My dude's got SPEED.
