Retro Replay: Super Mario Bros. 3 - Still the best?

I've been gaming since the NES days and I keep coming back to SMB3. It's got the perfect mix of platforming and power-ups, and it's TOUGH. But is it the best Mario game ever? Looking at graphics, gameplay, and innovation... what's ur take?

Graphics wise, it can't compete with the modern ones, that's obvious. Gameplay? Still top-notch, though some mechanics have been improved upon in later titles. Innovation, SMB3 was off the charts at the time. Still, best game ever is a stretch. Ever heard of Galaxy or Odyssey?

SMB3 isn't just about gameplay and innovation. It's about the memories it created and the pure joy of exploration in a pixelated world. Those secrets, those worlds... It's a time capsule of video game perfection that somehow manages to be both a product of its time and timeless.

SMB3 best Mario game? Pfft, everyone knows Mario Kart is where it's at. Platforming is for chumps. Bring on the bananas and blue shells!

IMO, SMB3 stands the test of time far better than many others. Graphics, for its era, were top-notch. Gameplay, still as smooth and responsive as you'd want. Innovation? Packed with it. Compared to the formulaic approach of many modern games, SMB3's levels felt like a fresh challenge every time. It's hard to say if it's the definitive best, but it's certainly an enduring masterpiece.

Graphics, gameplay, innovation? Sure, SMB3 was groundbreaking but you can't ignore what Odyssey brought to the table. Open-worldish freedom, Cappy's mechanics, graphics obviously outshine old NES titles. But respect where it's due, SMB3 paved the way.

SMB3 is a masterpiece, no doubt, but Super Mario World expanded on so many of SMB3's ideas and introduced Yoshi! That's gotta count for something. It's a close call between the two for me.

Totally agree with you on SMB3. It's hard to beat that nostalgic feeling and the game mechanics hold up even today. I've played it a thousand times and those airships still get me sometimes! Best Mario game? Tough competition, but it's def in my top 3.
