Understanding Strict Parents: A Deeper Look

Strict parents can often seem unreasonable, unfair, and overly punitive to their children. However, it's more nuanced than that.

Many strict parents are actually rooted in a deep desire for their children to achieve success and avoid hardship. These parents often believe that by enforcing tough rules, they're preparing their kids for a world that won't coddle them, teaching them that actions have consequences.

However, in some cases, a parent's strictness may veer into the realm of authoritarian parenting. This style uses punitive, fear-based tactics and doesn't take the child's feelings into account. It can be harmful, producing kids who are obedient, but also tend to have lower self-esteem, poorer social skills, and might be at a higher risk of mental health problems.

In these situations, open dialogue and a moderated approach can help. And remember, seeking professional help when things beyond control is also necessary.

Strict parents don’t always equate to successful kids tho. I'm in my 30s, have some pretty serious anxiety issues cuz of my super strict upbringing. Wish there’d been an open dialogue then, might rspct my parents more than I do rn. 😞

Very insightful post! Authoritarian parenting often gets conflated with being merely strict, but it's important to differentiate the two. One is about setting boundaries and teaching respect and discipline. The other is controlling and can create fear instead of understanding.

And the mental health risks associated with authoritarian parenting are real and significant. The lack of discussion, the imbalanced power dynamics it fosters, they can lead to a host of mental health issues in children that persist into adulthood.

It's equally important to understand that no style is 'one size fits all'. Different kids require different methodologies. Some may flourish under stricter rules while others may rebel. The key here is understanding your child, their needs, their personality, and then adapting your parenting style accordingly.

Growing up with strict parents, I definitely see where you're coming from. It was tough but tbh, I grateful for it now. I've learnt valuable life skills abt discipline and hard work. Ppl think it's all about fear and punishment but not really. Sure, my parents were stricter than most but they also cared deeply about us. Tough love, man.
