One tiny mistake, client’s data breached

Hey everyone, I’m Dave, been in info sec for years. But this one error of judgment ruined it all. Missed an endpoint in a security audit. Cracker got in, data breached, client's furious. Now I'm outta a job, reputation shredded, and I might face legal action. Feel like such an idiot — check, recheck, and then check your security measures again folks!

I’m so sorry to hear about what happened, Dave. Losing a job and facing legal trouble is rough, but it shows the unforgiving nature of our field. On a practical note, have you been able to do any forensic analysis to learn from the breach? Also, make sure to reach out to past colleagues and networks – your years of experience are still valuable and might help you bounce back even from this.

As a CISO, I've seen my share of incidents. Your situation is tough but not the end. Start with damage control, aid the client in any possible way to mitigate the breach. Next, transparency about your misstep could actually restore some trust in the industry. We all know this could happen to any of us. Use it to your advantage; speak at conferences, write a blog, be the guy who learned the hard way and help others avoid it.

I'm not your lawyer, but it's imperative to consult one ASAP. The cracker's at fault, but your liability depends on the contract with your client and your local laws. They can be complex, and each case is unique. Check the legal advice subreddit for basic pointers but get a professional in your corner.

Ppl who exploit mistakes like urs make me sick. 🤢 Can’t imagine what ur going through. Maybe look into professional liability insurance for the future? Stuff like this is why I'm afraid to go into info sec. Stay strong!

Dude, totally sucks to hear that. Remember, everyone makes mistakes, even with years of exp. Hindsight is 20/20, but maybe now's the time to share your story as a case study? Could help others, get you speaking gigs? Security's about learning from the mess-ups as much as the wins.
