So I was lounging on my couch, right? And got curious why they call us couch potatoes. It's from the 1970s mate, this artist made a couch potato sculpture... outta a potato. Just a spud kickin’ it back and watching TV. Thought that was like, the perfect circle haha.

Fascinating how a single artist's creation can spawn a whole new term that sticks for decades. It's a reflection of the TV era and how it reshaped leisure time. I wonder if there's a modern equivalent with all the streaming we do now. Streaming sweet potatoes, anyone?

Actually, that's not entirely accurate. The term 'couch potato' was popularized after the sculpture, sure, but it first appeared in a 1976 newspaper comic strip. The creators, Robert Armstrong and Jack Mingo, went on to write a satirical book, 'The Official Couch Potato Handbook,' which cemented the term in pop culture.

Nice one on the couch potato origin! That was during the conceptual art movement, right? Artists were all about pushing boundaries and using everyday objects. This couch potato thing was a satirical take on the 'American Dream,' being glued to the box. They were critiquing cultural passivity before binge-watching was even a thing!

Haha yeah, love that etymology stuff. Did you know the guy who coined the term was Tom Iacino from Pasadena? He was part of this art group called 'Underground Media'. They wanted to comment on how TV turned people into veggie-like mummies. Classic '70s rebel vibe. 🥔📺
