Hear me out. According to rumours from multiple leaks, the unthinkable is about to happen. Marvel is broken heartedly going to bid farewell to Tony Stark AKA Iron Man.
This sounds pretty far-fetched given Iron Man is a pillar of the entire MCU, but there are several indications that this might be on the cards. For one, Robert Downey Jr’s contract negotiations have been notoriously difficult in the past—if you were going to cut any Avenger out, it makes financial sense it’d be him.
Negotiations aside, let's look at it from a strictly narrative standpoint. Stark has had the greatest character development over the entirety of the MCU. He goes from being a selfish playboy to almost sacrificing himself for The Avengers in the first movie. We then see him dealing with the consequences of that in Iron Man 3 - he's got PTSD, he can hardly sleep, and he's questioning his whole existence.
Then Age of Ultron happens. We see an increasingly paranoid Stark attempting to 'end the fight so we can go home'. He’s willing to control the world to save it. Then Civil War marks a sharp turnaround, entirely shedding his previous libertarian persona and siding with government control.
Isn't there a clear trajectory here? Stark's prime motivation is his friends' safety - what better way can he ensure that than by making the ultimate sacrifice? It would definitely be a tragic end- but isn't that what makes it a fitting climax? If you ask me, Tony Stark's days are numbered.
