Is morality subjective or universal?

been lurking here for a while, decided to finally post smth. just had this huge debate with my buddy whether morals r subjective or there's like universal moral laws? like, do societies just make it up as they go or is there something deeper. idk, feels like everyone has their own version of right and wrong. thoughts??

psh, 'universal moral laws'? sounds like a scam to keep us all in line. we gotta make our own rules, not follow some made-up code that someone else decided on.

Morals have def gotten looser over time, but that doesn't mean anything goes. Some stuff is just right or wrong, no matter what society says. We gotta have some standards that stand the test of time.

I like to think there's something deeper in us, like empathy or compassion, that guides our morals. Even little kids who don't know all the rules yet show that they care about others. Isn't that proof there's something universal??

Lol, 'universal moral laws', good one. We're all just animals dressed up in fancy clothes pretending we've got it all figured out. Morals are just a social control mechanism, change my mind 🤣.

No way it's all subjective. There has to be some sort of universal moral code, or else everything just falls apart. If you say it's all subjective, then you can't criticize any action, since it might be okay in some other moral framework. That's dangerous thinking, dude.

Honestly, I think it’s all subjective. Cultures are super different, and what's good in one is bad in another. Think about it, even time changes morals, like a couple hundred years ago, things were waaay different. There's no moral stone tablets out there, we just make it up as we need to.

Man, this is that eternal debate, y'know? I’m studying philosophy, so this comes up a lot. My take is that it's kinda both. There are some universal principles, like just about every society thinks killing without reason is wrong. But then you get into the nitty-gritty, and it's all subjective. Like, eating meat is cool in some places, not so much in others. So yeah, I think we've got some basic rules everyone agrees on, but beyond that, it's up to the society to fill in the blanks.
