Remember Friday nights cruising the aisles of Blockbuster, walls of VHS tapes and later DVDs? I swear there was a special scent of popcorn and plastic cases. 90s kids know the struggle of finding a popular new release. Blockbuster could have bought Netflix once, crazy right? Instead, they nosedived into oblivion, paced out by streaming and on-demand video. Only one store left in Oregon, like a museum of a simpler time.

Ex-employee here. That special scent was often stale popcorn mixed with new plastic - quite unique. Ever had to check the tapes as they came in for scratches and to make sure they were rewound? Some shifts felt like I was the rewind police. Good times sort of, but wouldn't trade those memories.

I really miss those days. There was something special about the physicality of choosing a film. The cover art, the back-of-the-box synopsis, running into friends... Can't get that from scrolling on a screen. It was an experience, not just a transaction.

It's not just about the movies, it was the whole experience. The smell you're talking about - it's that mix of popcorn, plastic, and carpet cleaner that takes you back. Remember how the new releases had more copies behind the display box? You could spot the empty cases if you were too late. And if you were really desperate, you’d hover around the return drop waiting to snag one.
