New to D&D, need help with character building!

Hey folks, super new to D&D here, only done a few sessions with my friends. I'm trying to make a rogue wood elf character, but I'm a bit confused about the whole stats thing. Like, do I need to focus on INT more than DEX? And what about skills, too many options to choose from! Any tips for a newbie like me? Thanks!

Heya! The cool thing about D&D is you can tweak your characters to fit your playstyle. For a rogue, high DEX is usually a good bet for all the sneaky, backstabby bits. If you wanna dabble in magic, a bit of INT might help too. Just go with what feels right for your character and remember - have fun with it!

Pfft...why you wanna be a rogue elf when you could be a PIXIE?! Pixie wizard all the way, baby! Highest INT in the game and we get to fly! 🧚‍♂️💥

I've been running Elven characters for years, and the beauty of them is in the racial bonuses (especially that +2 DEX!). Now for a rogue, that's a GOLD MINE. Get DEX as high as you can, trust me you won't regret it. INT is nice, but it's a 'nice-to-have' thing, not the 'I-need-this-to-live' like DEX is hehe. For the skills, think rogue...stealth, perception, sleight of hand, these are your bread and butter. After that, just let your backstory guide you. Happy gaming!

Hey there! I'm fairly new too. From what I've been able to figure out, DEX is key for rogues, especially for a wood elf. I'd focus on that. And I've been picking skills based on what I think my character would actually be good at, based on their past experiences. Not sure if it's the best way, but it's working for me so far.

As the DM, I often see new players get overwhelmed with stats and skills. Just remember D&D is a game, meant to be fun. Think of your character’s backstory, what they've lived through, goals, fears. Your stats and skills should reflect that story. So don't worry too much about optimizing unless that's the fun for you!

Straight into the deep end, eh? Welcome aboard!

Ok, so for a rogue, Dexterity is the primary stat. Why? Because it affects so much of what a rogue does. From your attacks with finesse or ranged weapons to your Armor Class, initiative, and a bunch of your key skills like Stealth and Sleight of Hand.

Now, Intelligence (INT) can be handy depending on what kind of rogue you're building. If you want to go with an Arcane Trickster, more INT is definitely a good thing because it powers your spells. But it's not a must-have for most of the rogue archetypes.

Skills are where you really start to flavor your character. As a rogue, you get a pretty heaping selection to start with! What you pick really depends on how you want to play. Do you want to be charming and elusive? Maybe you want Persuasion and Deception. More of a sneaky thief? Stealth and Sleight of Hand. An observant scout? Perception and Investigation.

You really can't go wrong, so just pick something that sounds fun to you and run with it!

Wood elves make excellent rogues! 🧝‍♀️💚 Remember, they get bonuses to Dexterity and Wisdom, great for sneaking and noticing stuff. High INT is more for classes that like casting lots of spells. Stick with DEX, it's your bread and butter, especially for attacks and armor class. Skills choices can be overwhelming but just think about your character's personality and background. If they're a thief-type, maybe Sleight of Hand and Stealth. If more of a scout, maybe Survival and Nature. You got this!

So, basic rule of thumb, Dex is your best friend as a rogue. Sneak attack, lock picking, stealth, all tied to it. Int is generally secondary unless you wanna go for an Arcane Trickster build. For skills, I'd recommend definitely taking Stealth and Perception for the rogue-y necessities. Hope this helps!
