The Evolution of Barbie's Careers

Barbie has had over 200 careers since her introduction in 1959. From her initial debut as a teenage fashion model, she's been everything from an astronaut (1965) to a presidential candidate (1992, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016). Each career change reflects social progress and the opening of new career paths for women. It's fascinating to examine how Barbie's jobs have evolved alongside women's rights and societal shifts.

Barbie for president lol right, because when I think of politics, plastic dolls are defo my go-to. Next, she'll be Queen of Mars or something. 🤡

I wish they'd do more dual-career Ken and Barbie sets. Like Doctor Barbie and Nurse Ken, or Astronaut Barbie and Mission Controller Ken. It adds depth to their story and shows dynamic relationship roles too!

Absolutely love the variety of careers Barbie's had. My all-time fave has got to be 'Game Developer Barbie'. It broke so many stereotypes! But like, can we get more Barbies in roles that aren’t typically 'glam' to show girls they can be anything?

This whole career Barbie thing is cool and all, but you gotta wonder how much it's really impacted kids. They still end up making her clothes pink 90% of the time. Just sayin', appearance still overshadows the job title a lot.

Barbie's presidential runs have been so important—shows even in play, women belong in the Oval Office. 1992 to now, that's quite the statement chaps. Maybe if more boys played with Pres Candidate Barbie we'd have less glass ceiling irl?

does anyone keep track of all the careers Barbie's had? I mean, it's gotta be a crazy long list. Some of 'em have gotta be pretty out there, right?

Def agree with the social progress sentiment. Barbie as a STEM figure like a scientist or an engineer sends such a powerful msg to young girls! They really should continue to emphasize these roles. Tech is the future and Barbie should totally reflect that more!

Barbie's career choices have always been such an inspiration! It's like with every new doll, a new possibility for girls everywhere opens up. Who else remembers astronaut Barbie coming out and thinking 'I can go to space too'? Iconic!
