Getting a lunch order was legit the best part of primary school. Bring in your brown paper bag with some coins, maybe a sausage roll or meat pie, and then waiting for it with your classmates. Those bags were magic. Your name and order scrawled on them and maybe a juice box inside. Kept it simple, kept us happy!

Lunch orders in brown bags have quite the history in Australia. It was a simple system that developed in the post-war era when more mums started working, and school canteens popped up. A pragmatic solution for a changing society while still being a cherished ritual!

Haha, those bags were magical but the work behind the scenes was something else! We had to sort hundreds of those bags each morning, but the kids' excitement made it all worth it. Sometimes I'd slip a little extra treat into a bag as a surprise. 😉
