What is Screensport?

I heard about it. It was a WHSmith TV channel dedicated to sports. It aired alongside Lifestyle TV. I don't have any info. Except it was closed in 1993.

Remember watching Screensport in the pubs with the lads back in the day. They even had American sports, which were a novelty at the time this side of the pond. The good old days! Time flies, doesn't it?

Man, I miss the golden days of Screensport. It used to cover motorsport, kickboxing, wrestling, and even strongman competitions. A shame it had to shut down. Those were the days!

TV, bah! Who needs it? Especially sports... Go out and play some instead of being a couch potato. 😅

Screensport was indeed a sports channel, and it aired on satellite and cable television systems in Europe. It was launched in 1984 serving English-speaking expatriates and military personnel stationed in Europe, and intended to take advantage of the emergence of satellite television technology. They featured a wide range of sports both live and recorded. It was indeed closed down in 1993 following a merger with Eurosport. I think Lifestyle was a sister channel, which also ceased transmission around the same time.

Fun fact for you, it wasn't necessarily a WHSmith channel. It was actually owned by WHSmith TV which was subset of United Artists Cable International. Different thing, mate! They showed anything from wrestling to tennis.

Bit of trivia here, Screensport was also known as 'The European Sports Network'. They aired quite a variety of sports. Remember watching pro wrestling on it.

Ah Screensport, brings back memories! Remember it going head to head with Sky Sports. Too bad it didn't make it past '93. Twas a different time for sports broadcasting.
